Outer Reaches Announces Three Night Festival with Headliner Negativland
KANSAS CITY, MO. – The organizers of Outer Reaches, an annual live music festival operating since 2012, have announced the official date for the 2024 events. Friday September 20 at miniBar (3810 Broadway Blvd), Saturday September 21 at recordBar (1520 Grand Blvd), and Sunday September 22 at Charlotte Street (3333 Wyoming St.) in Kansas City, Missouri will mark the date and location for the festivities of Outer Reaches 2024.

The marquee Saturday September 21 show at recordBar features performances by two legendary groups with their origins in the late 1970s. Experimental music ensemble Negativland headline the night, joined by live cinema artist SUE-C handling the visuals. Negativland’s self-titled sound collage debut was released out of California’s Bay Area in 1980 and over the next four decades the group have been steadily releasing uncommon concept albums combining original music with things taken from corporately owned mass culture, along the way challenging convention (and American copyright laws). Athens, Georgia’s Pylon Reenactment Society feature members of legendary 1980s post-punk jangle pop group Pylon and pop rock group Casper & The Cookies. The group tours in support of their critically acclaimed new album Magnet Factory, while also performing classic Pylon tracks.

Outer Reaches Announces Boundary-Pushing Music Festival Featuring Bombino & Sweeping Promises

Friday October 13 and Saturday October 14 at recordBar (1520 Grand Blvd) in Kansas City, Missouri will mark the date and location for the festivities of Outer Reaches 2023.

The Friday October 13 headliner is the sound of Sahara’s next generation, Bombino. Omara “Bombino” Moctar is a Tuareg singersongwriter and guitarist from Niger. On a world tour for his new album Sahel, he continues the momentum of 2018’s Deran which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. Friday’s lineup also features Kansas City psychedelic rock bands The Philistines and Saving Miles Lemon as well as indie-folk multi-instrumentalist Teri Quinn. XO Blackwater will provide the video projection and visuals for the evening.
The Saturday October 14 show is a two-stage event. The Les BonsBons Electrique stage features a headliner of Lawrence, Kansas post-punk / new wave duo Sweeping Promises. Their new album Good Living is Coming for You was released in June on Feel it Records / Sub Pop Records. They are joined by Wichita, Kansas neo soul group Keo & Them, Kansas City shoegaze / new wave / post-punk duo Static Phantoms, and Kansas City synth-tastic beat guru Alyssa Murray. The Kansas City Synthesizer Collective is a group of local synthesizer enthusiasts who enjoy sharing and performing what they have learned from their generated audio signal instruments. Their stage features performances by three local artists: Wrker, Agrekulture, and Bobcat Attack. A headlining slot is reserved for Detroit, Michigan post-punk bizarro-pop group Summer Like the Season.

Two bonus Outer Reaches Presents shows will precede the festival on Sunday October 9 and Tuesday October 11 at recordBar.

The music of Outer Reaches 2022 will be showcased over two stages at recordBar. The Friday lineup features a night of dark electronic music. Nebraska’s leather-clad industrial noise / body music project Plack Blague headlines the night, joined by Des Moines, Iowa Halloween-themed synth duo Night Stories. A quintuple of Kansas City artists round out the night: psychedelic synth group Monta at Odds; dark electronic / witchwave project Morgue VVitch; electronic “soulgaze” / “garage disco” outfit Collidescope; queer dark-pop group Boxknife; and downtempo electropop artist Loqsa. The Saturday lineup features two warhorses of the Midwest rock music scene; Chicago’s eclectic art rock band Cheer-Accident and Kansas City post-hardcore noise-rock band Season to Risk. Joining them on the night are Los Angeles’ experimental voodoo blues group Peculiar Pretzelmen and another quintuple of Kansas City artists: psychedelic pop group The Moose; twin sister sparkly witch-rock band The Black Mariah Theater; experimental psychedelic indie songwriter Jacob E.chord; looping vocal exorcist She Speaks in Tongues; and experimental dance project Composition of Dance. XO Blackwater provides the video projection / visuals for both evenings.

The music of Outer Reaches 2019 will be showcased over two stages at recordBar. The eighth annual lineup features two touring acts including space rock band Lumerians (Oakland, CA) and pop duo Thunder Jackson (Oklahoma / Wales). Kansas City bands featured at the festival this year include cosmic jazz legends BCR (Black Crack Revue), synthesizer-based psychedelic rock band Monta at Odds, space rock band Be/Non, experimental hip hop duo FACEFACE, and experimental music / performance artist Unicorns in the Snow. Accompanying live video projections will be provided by XO Blackwater.
Outer Reaches 2019 is a partnership between the festival and Midwest Music Foundation and has been made possible through a grant from the Kansas City Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund. Midwest Music Foundation (MMF), a nonprofit organization founded in 2008, provides health care assistance, education, and resources to the Kansas City music community, and receive proceeds from ticket sales from the event. The weekend before Halloween, Friday, October 26 and Saturday, October 27, 2018, the festival Outer Reaches will haunt the crowds at recordBar (1520 Grand Avenue) in Kansas City, Missouri.

Regional acts as well as national and international touring acts are a part of the festival’s spirit, celebrating the variety of experimental music around the globe. There has always a strong tie to music that would fit into the realm of psychedelic music, but the festival has since opened up to more genres with a goal of promoting all music that is adventurous and mind expanding. The festival began in 2012 at FOKL Center, a community art space in downtown Kansas City, Kansas and was organized by Dedric Moore of local psych / experimental bands Monta At Odds and Mysterious Clouds. Adding Haymaker Records owner Brenton Cook and recordBar owner Steve Tulipana to the Outer Reaches crew, the trio have sought to grow and change the festival each and every year. This will be the first year that the festival falls the weekend before Halloween.

Friday, September 29th will feature touring acts Deerhoof (San Francisco, CA), Lily and Horn Horse (New York City, NY), and Matchess (Chicago, IL). Kansas City acts Various Blonde and Mysterious Clouds also join the bill Friday. Saturday, September 30th features touring acts El Ten Eleven (Los Angeles, CA), Dead Rider (Chicago, IL), and Sego (Los Angeles, CA).
Kansas City is represented on Saturday with Pageant Boys and a special reunion show of The Hearers. The show schedules will be released at a later date with the possibility of one or more additional acts on the bill. Both days will have accompanying live video projection and local DJ’s playing music between sets.
Rebranded festival, Outer Reaches, launches this Fall at recordBar
KANSAS CITY, MO. – The organizers of the Kansas City Psych Fest, an annual live music festival in its fifth year, have announced an official name change, official dates, and lineups for their upcoming two-night event. On Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1, 2016, the festival Outer Reaches will take over recordBar’s new location at 1520 Grand Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri.
The festival began in 2012 at FOKL Center, a community art space in downtown Kansas City, Kansas and was organized by Dedric Moore of Monta At Odds, a local psych/experimental indie band. Adding Haymaker Records owner Brenton Cook and recordBar owner Steve Tulipana to the Outer Reaches crew, the trio have sought to include regional acts along with national touring bands. With the fresh moniker as part of the festival’s rebranding, Outer Reaches aims to include music outside the psychedelic genre.
“This new vision for the festival is really about experimenting within and pushing boundaries in every genre,” Tulipana said. “We want to showcase the ‘out there,’ left-of-center, under-the-radar bands putting on great shows.”
