Courtyard DJ Bill Elder at FOKL on Friday

Bill Elder, who performed last year under the alias DJ MEMO due to the global manhunt for his importing of rare vinyl into the country, will be djing psych from around the world in the courtyard this year on Friday night at FOKL. This alone is worth the entry price.

Saturday at FOKL musings

Saturday will be loud at FOKL. Not in a bad way. In a way that shakes your core and makes you want to say “Yeahh!!!” and definitely a 180 degree turn from the throbbing electro that you will be dancing to on Friday at FOKL.

Karma Vision kick off the night with it’s brand of indie goodness. Hopefully we will hear them perform new songs from their ambitious “release one single per month” song cycle.

Snake Island! play teenage blues in classic garage rock style.

Bloodbirds have a new vinyl record. Their post punk take on psych will get you going. And grab that vinyl.

Comoros are a duo that planned a whole tour around stopping here for our festival. Bring some chalk and mark the floor in front of the stage as your place to stand and get enveloped in waves of synth, distortion, chaos and inner peace.

I heard Expo 70 practicing some new tunes for you. They are heavy riffage but hang on, they have some great drone moments to counter the RIFFS.

Conquerors will close out the night with swirly guitars as they perform their blown-out speaker garage rock. ENERGY is what they have on stage. You will too.

Aaron Martin will create a mesmerizing tapestry of loops with a cello.

Gemini Revolution will pause the drums and perform an ambient homage to the Geminid meteor shower that inspired their new release.

Aurograph feat. Ashley Miller, Mark Southerland and Shawn Hansen will perform trance inducing aural treatment.

Discoverer will bring his lush synth-based music to life.

Metatone will drop catchy, quirky (dare I say bounce) to the fest with their infectious upbeat music. They have a new CD released so hear it, feel it, buy it.

And yes, Sam F will be projecting more amazing visual stimulus.

Thoughts on what to look forward to at FOKL on Friday.

Your Friend will be giving you a beautiful start with dreamy guitar and floating vocals.

Stacian will move the night into a psych-tinged synth heavy electro dance vibe.

Samantha Glass will continue the trend and add in more dark 80’s scifi soundtrack.

Golden Donna has formed a 5-piece band to bring you their soundtrack to Drive if the driver stayed in the wrong part of town and had a more intense romance.

Umberto closes out the night with his own version of gritty electronics and hidden club dance vibes.

VJDN8 will be back at FOKL to provide the visual stimulation for your journey.

Without giving away too much you will hear on Friday at HQ:

CJ Boyd – a solo bassist take looping and emotion to a new level.

Jim Button, drummer of The Conquerors, bringing his solo project from the studio to a live band.

Parts of Speech inject Krautrock into their lush synths.

Monta At Odds have an entire new set this year of interstellar grooves and heady swirls of sound.

Your Reflection will play a rare live set mashing synths, samples, guitar and drums into some funky grooves and head-trip effects.

Sam F will be dropping visual magic at HQ all night long.

Band selection?

posted in: Psych Fest 2013 0

Q: Why isn’t my favorite band playing? They played last year and were great.

A: We loved every band last year. We were impressed that everyone gave great performances. We also had to decline a lot of bands that we did like but had no room left on the bill. So this year we asked new bands and had to tell past performers that we didn’t have room this year for them.

Our committee is determined to give you a new experience each festival. So we worked a long time on selecting bands that will make each night unique and retain the good vibrations we had last year. You dug it last year, right? So trust us again. And don’t worry, we will keep mixing it up so your favorite band might be on the bill next year.
