Outer Reaches 2017 Lineup Announced!

Outer Reaches Announces Fall Music Festival Lineup

KANSAS CITY, MO. – The organizers of Outer Reaches, an annual live music festival in its sixth year, have announced official dates and lineups for their upcoming two-night event. On Friday, September 29 and Saturday, September 30, 2017, the festival Outer Reaches will overtake recordBar (1520 Grand Avenue) in Kansas City, Missouri.

Outer Reaches is a music festival based in Kansas City that showcases the ‘out there’, left-of-center, under-the-radar artists experimenting within and pushing boundaries in their respective genre. Regional acts as well as national and international touring acts are a part of the festival’s spirit, celebrating the variety of experimental music around the globe. There has always a strong tie to music that would fit into the realm of psychedelic music, but the festival has since opened up to more genres with a goal of promoting all music that is adventurous and mind expanding. The festival began in 2012 at FOKL Center, a community art space in downtown Kansas City, Kansas and was organized by Dedric Moore of local psych / experimental bands Monta At Odds and Mysterious Clouds. Adding Haymaker Records owner Brenton Cook and recordBar owner Steve Tulipana to the Outer Reaches crew, the trio have sought to grow and change the festival each and every year.

The music of Outer Reaches 2017 will be showcased over two days at recordBar in late September. Friday, September 29th will feature touring acts Deerhoof (San Francisco, CA), Lily and Horn Horse (New York City, NY), and Matchess (Chicago, IL). Kansas City acts Various Blonde and Mysterious Clouds also join the bill Friday. Saturday, September 30th features touring acts El Ten Eleven (Los Angeles, CA), Dead Rider (Chicago, IL), and Sego (Los Angeles, CA).
Kansas City is represented on Saturday with Pageant Boys and a special reunion show of The Hearers. The show schedules will be released at a later date with the possibility of one or more additional acts on the bill. Both days will have accompanying live video projection and local DJ’s playing music between sets.

Outer Reaches 2016 Lineup Announced!

Rebranded festival, Outer Reaches, launches this Fall at recordBar

KANSAS CITY, MO. – The organizers of the Kansas City Psych Fest, an annual live music festival in its fifth year, have announced an official name change, official dates, and lineups for their upcoming two-night event. On Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1, 2016, the festival Outer Reaches will take over recordBar’s new location at 1520 Grand Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri.

The festival began in 2012 at FOKL Center, a community art space in downtown Kansas City, Kansas and was organized by Dedric Moore of Monta At Odds, a local psych/experimental indie band. Adding Haymaker Records owner Brenton Cook and recordBar owner Steve Tulipana to the Outer Reaches crew, the trio have sought to include regional acts along with national touring bands. With the fresh moniker as part of the festival’s rebranding, Outer Reaches aims to include music outside the psychedelic genre.

“This new vision for the festival is really about experimenting within and pushing boundaries in every genre,” Tulipana said. “We want to showcase the ‘out there,’ left-of-center, under-the-radar bands putting on great shows.”

The music of Outer Reaches 2016 will be showcased on two stages over two days at recordBar on Friday, September 30th and Saturday, October 1st. Friday, September 30th will feature the local acts Gamelan Genta Kasturi, Freight Train Rabbit Killer, and Psychic Heat on the first stage, joined by the touring acts Open Fields (Little Rock, AR) and L.A. Witch (Los Angeles, CA). The second stage Friday features the local groups Salty, Youngest Children, Arc Flash, and The Deep End (Brandon Draper & Joc Max). Saturday, October 1st features local acts Emmaline Twist, Michael Angelo’s Dreamfeast, and Be/Non on the first stage, joined by the touring acts Gramps the Vamp (Chicago, IL) and Magic Sword (Boise, ID). Michael Angelo’s performance is just a week after his performance at the POP Montreal festival, marking the first times that he’ll have ever performed the material from his self-titled (and now famously reissued) 1977 album. The second stage Saturday will feature Kimmie Queen & Cody Wyoming, The Tambourine Club, Witch Jail, and HMPH!. Both days will have accompanying video projection provided by Cinemaphonic.

Sponsors for this year’s festival include Records With Merritt, Josey Records, It’s a Beautiful Day, 7th Heaven, Sound 81 Productions, Boulevard Brewing Company, Seen Merch, Haymaker Records, and C&C Drum Company.

Outer Reaches 2016

Rebranded festival, Outer Reaches, launches this Fall at recordBar

KANSAS CITY, MO – The organizers of Kansas City Psych Fest, an annual live music festival in its fifth year, have announced a name change and official dates for their upcoming two-night event. On Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1, 2016, the festival Outer Reaches will take over recordBar’s new location at 1520 Grand Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. The fresh moniker is part of the festival’s rebranding, with aims to include music outside the psychedelic genre.

“The term ‘psych’ was convenient at first, but we’ve found it to be limiting,” said Brenton Cook, owner of Haymaker Records and festival organizer. “We really want to branch out from a particular genre, widening the base for adventurous music.”

The festival began in 2012 at FOKL Center, a community art space in downtown Kansas City, Kansas and was organized by Dedric Moore of Monta At Odds, a local psych/experimental indie band. From the beginning, Moore and partners have sought to include regional acts along with national touring bands.

“When we started, the intent was to bring a focus to bands and artists that wouldn’t otherwise have a stage or forum,” Moore said. “And we wanted it to be an immersive, interactive multimedia experience. So we’ve always had video projection and visual elements to lend to that idea. We plan to continue that as we move forward into the next phase of the festival’s evolution.”

In subsequent years, the festival expanded into other venues, finding a home at recordBar in 2014 and 2015, when recordBar owner Steve Tulipana became involved.

“This new vision for the festival is really about experimenting within and pushing boundaries in every genre,” Tulipana said. “We want to showcase the ‘out there,’ left-of-center, under-the-radar bands putting on great shows.”

The Outer Reaches full festival lineup will be announced in August and there are plans to host two stages in recordBar’s new space during each night of the event. The artists showcased over the years have been culled from a wide range of talent, with past acts including Gringo Star, White Mystery, Slim Twig, and David Hasselhoff on Acid.

Be/Non Record Release Party – Scottish Rite 2016/02/28

KANSAS CITY, MO. – Kansas City-based Haymaker Records releases the album Mystic Sunrise / Sunset Magic by space rock group Be/Non on vinyl LP and digital media on leap day February 29, 2016. Mystic Sunrise / Sunset Magic is the sixth album for Be/Non and will be celebrated with an album release concert entitled MEDITATION: A Live Presentation of Mystic Sunrise / Sunset Magic by Be/Non in the temple of the Kansas City Scottish Rite, 1330 Linwood Blvd, Kansas City, MO, on Sunday February 28th 6-10PM.

In 1996, Brodie Rush and his rock band Be/Non recorded two sets of songs in a small home studio in Lawrence, Kansas – material that would become their first two EPs released on cassette. Twenty years later and with a rotating cast of band members, Be/Non is still at it and proud to present the release Mystic Sunrise / Sunset Magic. Recorded over the course of six years in Brodie Rush’s home studio, the album features Be/Non family old and new performing compelling songs that incorporate pop elements into synth-drenched space rock. A musical direction unlike all previous endeavors, Mystic Sunrise / Sunset Magic is a meditative album based on deep thought and cosmic oneness. It’s a one-two punch into the unknown with intuitive trajectory, a must-listen for those with a bucket-list for the bizarre. The vinyl is pressed in limited edition purple blob vinyl with digital download included. It is the fifth vinyl release for Haymaker Records.

The show on February 28th will feature Be/Non playing the new album in its entirety, rotating in musicians who assisted in its creation. The Kansas City Scottish Rite was chosen as a location for the event out of a curiosity surrounding the Masonic temple itself that will undoubtedly compliment the music and viewing experience. Built in 1928 and featuring classic Greek design inspired by the ancient mausoleum at Halicarnassus in Caria, the temple has a rich history in Kansas City but little in the way of public music performances. Christian Hankel will be handling stage production for the event and Kansas City catering company Cool Guy Foods will provide catered small bites. Copies of the new vinyl record will be available to the public for the first time at this event. Check out the Facebook Event Page for more details.
