Outer Reaches Explores the World 2018
Outer Reaches Explores the World 2018

Outer Reaches is pleased to announce the first of two events for 2018. Outer Reaches Explores the World 2018 is a new format with an emphasis on artists inspired by rhythms and traditional instruments of the world, who have incorporated this sound in creative ways to construct new boundary-pushing music. This isn’t a “world music” event per se and will still feature the familiar format of left-of-center music, it just has more of a worldly feel to it. This special event has been made possible through a grant from the Kansas City Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund and will function as a benefit for Midwest Music Foundation. Special promotions courtesy of KKFI 90.1 FM. We will still have our regular two-day main event of Outer Reaches in the fall. Stay tuned for more news on that announcement.

Outer Reaches 2017 Lineup Announced!

Outer Reaches Announces Fall Music Festival Lineup

KANSAS CITY, MO. – The organizers of Outer Reaches, an annual live music festival in its sixth year, have announced official dates and lineups for their upcoming two-night event. On Friday, September 29 and Saturday, September 30, 2017, the festival Outer Reaches will overtake recordBar (1520 Grand Avenue) in Kansas City, Missouri.

Outer Reaches is a music festival based in Kansas City that showcases the ‘out there’, left-of-center, under-the-radar artists experimenting within and pushing boundaries in their respective genre. Regional acts as well as national and international touring acts are a part of the festival’s spirit, celebrating the variety of experimental music around the globe. There has always a strong tie to music that would fit into the realm of psychedelic music, but the festival has since opened up to more genres with a goal of promoting all music that is adventurous and mind expanding. The festival began in 2012 at FOKL Center, a community art space in downtown Kansas City, Kansas and was organized by Dedric Moore of local psych / experimental bands Monta At Odds and Mysterious Clouds. Adding Haymaker Records owner Brenton Cook and recordBar owner Steve Tulipana to the Outer Reaches crew, the trio have sought to grow and change the festival each and every year.

The music of Outer Reaches 2017 will be showcased over two days at recordBar in late September. Friday, September 29th will feature touring acts Deerhoof (San Francisco, CA), Lily and Horn Horse (New York City, NY), and Matchess (Chicago, IL). Kansas City acts Various Blonde and Mysterious Clouds also join the bill Friday. Saturday, September 30th features touring acts El Ten Eleven (Los Angeles, CA), Dead Rider (Chicago, IL), and Sego (Los Angeles, CA).
Kansas City is represented on Saturday with Pageant Boys and a special reunion show of The Hearers. The show schedules will be released at a later date with the possibility of one or more additional acts on the bill. Both days will have accompanying live video projection and local DJ’s playing music between sets.

Outer Reaches 2016 Lineup Announced!

Rebranded festival, Outer Reaches, launches this Fall at recordBar

KANSAS CITY, MO. – The organizers of the Kansas City Psych Fest, an annual live music festival in its fifth year, have announced an official name change, official dates, and lineups for their upcoming two-night event. On Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1, 2016, the festival Outer Reaches will take over recordBar’s new location at 1520 Grand Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri.

The festival began in 2012 at FOKL Center, a community art space in downtown Kansas City, Kansas and was organized by Dedric Moore of Monta At Odds, a local psych/experimental indie band. Adding Haymaker Records owner Brenton Cook and recordBar owner Steve Tulipana to the Outer Reaches crew, the trio have sought to include regional acts along with national touring bands. With the fresh moniker as part of the festival’s rebranding, Outer Reaches aims to include music outside the psychedelic genre.

“This new vision for the festival is really about experimenting within and pushing boundaries in every genre,” Tulipana said. “We want to showcase the ‘out there,’ left-of-center, under-the-radar bands putting on great shows.”

The music of Outer Reaches 2016 will be showcased on two stages over two days at recordBar on Friday, September 30th and Saturday, October 1st. Friday, September 30th will feature the local acts Gamelan Genta Kasturi, Freight Train Rabbit Killer, and Psychic Heat on the first stage, joined by the touring acts Open Fields (Little Rock, AR) and L.A. Witch (Los Angeles, CA). The second stage Friday features the local groups Salty, Youngest Children, Arc Flash, and The Deep End (Brandon Draper & Joc Max). Saturday, October 1st features local acts Emmaline Twist, Michael Angelo’s Dreamfeast, and Be/Non on the first stage, joined by the touring acts Gramps the Vamp (Chicago, IL) and Magic Sword (Boise, ID). Michael Angelo’s performance is just a week after his performance at the POP Montreal festival, marking the first times that he’ll have ever performed the material from his self-titled (and now famously reissued) 1977 album. The second stage Saturday will feature Kimmie Queen & Cody Wyoming, The Tambourine Club, Witch Jail, and HMPH!. Both days will have accompanying video projection provided by Cinemaphonic.

Sponsors for this year’s festival include Records With Merritt, Josey Records, It’s a Beautiful Day, 7th Heaven, Sound 81 Productions, Boulevard Brewing Company, Seen Merch, Haymaker Records, and C&C Drum Company.
